Harvey Weinstein was born in Queens, New York on March 19 1952 to Max and Miriam Weinstein. He grew up in a household, in New York City. Upon completing his studies at the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1973 Weinstein decided to establish a concert promotion business in the area.

Movies and The Weinstein Company

In 1979 along with his brother Bob Weinstein co-founded Miramax, a film company named after their parents. Miramax gained renown for producing and distributing films such as “Sex, Lies and Videotape” (1989) “The Crying Game” (1992) “Pulp Fiction” (1994), and “Shakespeare in Love” (1998) which earned Weinstein an Academy Award for Best Picture.

Guided by Weinstein’s vision, Miramax became a player in the film scene recognized for its willingness to back unique and controversial cinematic projects. In 2005, Weinstein and his brother decided to leave Miramax and establish a production company known as The Weinstein Company.

This company went on to create and distribute films leading to Weinstein receiving seven Tony Awards for producing plays and musicals such, as “The Producers,” “Billy Elliot the Musical ” and “August; Osage County.” Additionally, he received an Academy Award for ‘Shakespeare in Love’.

Lantern Capital Partners purchased the assets of The Weinstein Company, which included its collection of films and television shows. The Weinstein Company shut down in July 2018. It was formally dissolved, signaling the conclusion of the production company that Harvey Weinstein helped establish and managed for, more than ten years.

Sexual Abuse Allegations and Convictions

In October of 2017 reports, from The New York Times and The New Yorker revealed that more than 80 women had come forward accusing Harvey Weinstein of misconduct including harassment, assault, and rape spanning back to the late 1970s. These accusations led to the emergence of the #MeToo movement aimed at addressing and combating behavior.

Following these allegations, Weinstein was dismissed from his company, expelled from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and faced charges in both New York and California. By May 2018 he had been charged with sex crimes in New York. Subsequently, in 2020 Weinstein was found guilty of acts and third-degree rape in New York resulting in a sentencing of 23 years behind bars.

In a trial held in Los Angeles in 2022, Weinstein was convicted on charges related to rape and sexual assault leading to an additional prison term of 16 years. However, his conviction from the case in New York was overturned on appeal in April 2024 necessitating a trial. Despite this development overturning one conviction against him Weinstein will continue serving time due to his sentencing for offenses in California.

The impact of the allegations against him and the subsequent #MeToo movement has been profound not within the entertainment industry but across society, as a whole.

Harvey Weinstein was formerly married to Georgina Chapman for fourteen years until their divorce was finalized in 2021. Chapman, a fashion designer and actress is known for her role, in co-founding the esteemed fashion brand Marchesa. Georgina and Weinstein started their relationship in 2004 before he split from his wife Eve Chilton whom he was married, from 1987 to 2004.
